The Springboks are already fully in ‘Test week’ mode as they prepare for this Sunday’s clash against Scotland, which kicks off at 17:45.

Although the national coaches usually announce their team early in the week, there are different protocols in place at the World Cup, and it initially seemed as if they would only reveal the matchday squad within a 48-hour window before the game.

However, it’s since been confirmed that the Springboks have received permission from World Rugby to announce the team earlier than 48 hours before the game. It will now be released by 7pm on Wednesday night.

Nienaber’s charges finished a pre-tournament camp in Corsica on Friday, while they have now gathered in Toulon and have been back in training since Monday.

“When we started this journey in 2018, we knew there would be limited time to prepare for the 2019 World Cup,” said Nienaber.

“But we had four years to prepare for this tournament, although we lost one due to the COVID pandemic. In that time our focus was largely on building as much squad depth as possible. So, I think that’s the main difference between now and 2019.”
