‘I’ll be back’: Phalatse vows to return to politics, still DA member
Dr Mpho Phalatse announced she was resigning as a PR Councillor in the City of Johannesburg and returning to medicine
Despite her resignation as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg, Dr Mpho Phalatse says she has every intention of eventually making a comeback to politics.
Phalatse said it was the political and economic climate which prompted her to reconsider her career as a councillor and is going back to the medical field.
“I have, throughout my career, never compromised on doing quality work and I am concerned that faced with a choice between my Council responsibilities and medical career, I am inclined to choose to save a life,” she said in her resignation letter.

The former Johannerburg Mayor is, however, has stressed that she is still a Democratic Alliance (DA) member.
“However, my resignation should never be misconstrued as a resignation from the Democratic Alliance (DA). Neither should it be considered as the end of my political career. I remain a patriotic South African and my return to public service is guaranteed. Time will tell”Outgoing City of Johannesburg PR Councillor Mpho Phalatse

Her resignation as councillor is effective from 30 September 2023. She has had two stints as Joburg mayor, but was ousted in motions of no confidence spearheaded by opposition parties in the council. In April, she also lost her bid to become the DA’s leader to John Steenhuisen.
In her resignation letter to DA Caucus leader Belinda Echeozonjoku, Phalatse described her various roles in public service as fulfilling and an honour.
“When I came into mainstream politics in 2016, I was motivated by the desire to serve. That decision came at a huge personal sacrifice and sacrifice of my family. I left my medical profession and thriving business in order to contribite to the rebuilding of my country,” she said.
Yes it’s true! I will be back.
