WATCH: Americans reveal what ‘shocks’ them about South Africa
An American couple that recently stayed in South Africa for some time had some interesting things to say about their stay.
Believe it or not, some Americans do imagine South Africa to be one giant safari with some cosmopolitan features. But that definitely isn’t the case for one African American couple that stayed in the for several months documented their experience on Youtube.
Trevante and Jessica Moody have been criss crossing Africa, having already visited countries like Tanzania and Kenya with their toddler. They spent quite some time in South Africa and made a few observations, some which we probably take for granted.

WHAT DO THESE AMERICANS THINK OF SOUTH AFRICA?
South Africa is similar to America: The couple, which was based in Johannesburg for their stay, compared the City of Gold to other American cities like Dallas in Texas. They also visited Cape Town and Pretoria.
“When we got here, it [South Africa] looks a lot like America. Just the way the roads are, the way the buildings are, it is very similar,” Jessica said.
Food ‘not as expensive’: The couple said they found food to be reasonably priced as well, which isn’t so hard to believe, given that the one dollar typically equates to between R18 and R19. For South African consumers, it’s a totally different story.
Load shedding: Thanks to Eskom’s effectiveness as a power utility, rolling blackouts have become a normal occurrence for the country. While the couple said it had done its research about load shedding, prior to their arrival, they were stunned by how often the rolling blackouts are enforced.
Weed and Alcohol: The recreational use of marijuana also took the couple by surprise. They also found that the country has a wider range of alcoholic brands on the market, which was apparently not the case in the other African countries they visited.
South Africans are bigger … apparently: Compared to other countries, they reckon South Africans are much bigger, especially the men.
“The people here are bigger. Not like fat, but tall. Especially the men. They’re like taller and more muscular. When we were in Tanzania, the men are kind of shorter and skinner. They’re kind of built like teenagers, like in America,” Jessica said.
