The Economic Freedom Fighters in Gauteng has called for the immediate removal of Curro Academy Protea Glen Primary School Executive Head, Shanette Tiquin and for her to be criminally charged for hate speech.

This comes as a female teacher was allegedly called a monkey in June this year.

This incident was reported to the school and a formal complaint was lodged by the teacher.

Unsurprisingly, the school’s head of operations cowardly engaged in a malicious compliance process and shielded the racist Mrs Tiquin from accountability and insinuated that there should not be consequences for racism.

The Red Berets said this comes as no surprise as the school is forever making headlines for their unrepentant racist behaviour.

“In 2015 parents at the Curro schools in Northern Cape took to the streets, accusing Curro of Segregation. In the same year, their Roodeplaat campus near Pretoria was also accused of segregating its learners. In 2018 their Waterfall was accused of racist labour practices and in 2019 cleaners at Curro Oakdene were allegedly called three little monkeys by a teacher whilst having lunch in a staff room,” the party said.

The EFF further called on the South African Human Rights Council (SAHRC) to pay specific attention to cases of racism leveled against Curro Holdings as these incidents are not isolated.

THE INSTITUTION RESPONDS

In a statement, Curro Holdings said it has taken the allegations at Protea Glen very seriously and an investigation is underway.

Spokesperson Fergus Sampson said the details surrounding the case are complex hence the appointment of an external mediator to assist.

“While we have arranged extra security at the school for the safety of all staff, teachers and learners, we most urgently ask for the matter to be resolved in peace and with due process of fairness, without violence of any kind,” Sampson added.
