The seventh Commonwealth Youth Games kicked off yesterday (Fri 4 Aug) on the Islands of Trinidad and Tobago, with Team South Africa flying the flag high for fans back home.
The South Africans join over 1,000 athletes and para athletes between the ages of 14 and 18, from around the world, who will participate in seven sports, managed by more than 500 officials, until 11 August.
SA netball’s Karla Victor and cycling’s Ethan Kulsen carried the flag for Team SA at the opening ceremony in Port of Spain.
Karla Victor of Oranje Meisiesskool in Bloemfontein and Ethan Kulsen of Klein Nederburg Secondary School in Paarl, were presented with the flag by SASCOC president Barry Hendricks at a special occasion.
According to the Commonwealth Youth Games’ website, it is “an invaluable springboard for the stars and leaders of tomorrow, contributing to the further development of youth sport throughout the Commonwealth.”
The Games have traditionally taken place every four years, but the 2021 Games were postponed to this year due to the impact of the pandemic on the international sport calendar, says the website.
Roger Sedres captured these wonderful photos featuring the talented SA youth at the Games opening.
