City of Ekurhuleni condemns theft of grader tyres and rims

The City of Ekurhuleni has been set back over R200 000 after its grader was found without its set of tyres and rims recently.

HOW THE GRADER WAS STOLEN IN THE CITY OF EKURHULENI

The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Sivuyile Ngodwana condemned the vandalism and theft of municipal property and infrastructure, ‘because it derails service delivery’.

Mayor Ngodwana shared his sentiments on this issue during a visit to the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton as part of the Mayoral Masisebenzeni programme. When he got to the stadium he found a grader sitting on bricks with all tyres worth an estimated R250 000 missing.

MAYOR CITES WHAT THE INCIDENT MEANS TO THE RESIDENTS

“Theft of municipal property does not only delay the delivery of services, but it also inconveniences residents who benefit directly from these services,” lamented Cllr Ngodwana.

“We condemn the senseless theft of six brand new tyres and rims belonging to a sports field grader stationed at Sinaba stadium”.

The grader belongs to the Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture and its main purpose is to prepare the informal soccer fields to make them more usable for communities, according to the City of Ekurhuleni mayor.

CASE BEING INVESTIGATED BY THE POLICE

He added that the newly purchased tyres, rims and studs were removed and stolen overnight a few weeks after they were installed.

“The security officials deployed at the stadium were held at gunpoint while the crime was being committed. The incident was reported to the authorities and a case of theft has been registered with SAPS. Investigations are underway and no arrests have been made as yet,” Ngodwana indicated.
