South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa joined learners in Qunu who were part of national and continental Mandela Day coding tournaments.
There were around 70 sites across all nine provinces, as well as other African countries, with over 10,000 learners participating.
The national event was organised by Tangible Africa, a partnership between Nelson Mandela University and the Leva Foundation. The movement’s objective is to introduce learners to coding without the use of computers. Through brilliantly created games, learners acquire the skills required to code.
President Ramaphosa praised the learners for their high standard and for trying to teach him to code.
“I would love to learn,” he told them. “You are already at that high level… use that opportunity – it is a great opportunity that the government is opening up for all of you. You live in a new era – of cell phones, computers, coding. Take it with both hands and make sure that you practice and do well, because what you’re learning now is going to stand you in good stead, and is preparing you for the future… and all of you want to be successful in your future, is that not so!?”
