A Facebook post by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety went viral after it alleged a 53-year-old man was caught speeding in a Chinese bakkie at over 200km/h on the N4 in Gauteng.
South African social media users reacted to the post and in the comments section questioned the accuracy of the speed recorded by the traffic authorities.

The caption on the post by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety said: “Adhere to Speed Limits! The Gauteng Traffic Police arrested a 53 year-old man for speeding along the N4 on Sunday, 02 July 2023.
“The suspect was driving a GWM P series and clocked 203km/h on the freeway. Motorists are reminded to obey the road regulations and not drive over the prescribed speed limits. #GrowingASaferGauteng,” the post said.

According to The Citizen, when they conducted a road test with the GWM P-Series they recorded a top speed of 147km/h at the one-kilometre distance. It took the Chinese bakkie over 36 seconds to reach that speed.
Therefore, the 203km/h speed quoted by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety is in serious doubt as it’s unrealistic that the bakkie was traveling at that lofty speed.
