Scorpion King’s – Kabza de Small and DJ Maphorisa – have been slapped with a letter of demand by an event organiser who claimed they stole his intellect property.
According to Sunday World, Thabiso Tshabalala – an event organiser and executive producer of The Braai Show with Cassper – said that the Emcimbini hitmakers’ Scorpion Kings Live At Sun Arena was his brainchild.
BUSINESSMAN AND PRODUCER CLAIMS DJS STOLE HIS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Tshabalala, who organised Afro-pop artist Sjava’s popular musical event called One Night With Sjava, told the publication that he approached the producers with a proposal to host the show in Pretoria on 4 January 2020.
He claimed that he had already had sponsorship and had secured Sun Bet Arena when he approached the musicians. According to the event organiser, the three of them agreed to equally share the proceeds from the event, which is equal to over 33% each.

However, two years later, he found out that an event with the same name would be hosted in the same venue on 22 July. The concert indeed room place, and according to the businessman, the pair grossed R3 million from it.
“This was a breach of the verbal agreement with Mr Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe [DJ Maphorisa] and Mr Kabelo Motha Mahlangu [Kabza de Small], and our client further informed Mr Netshipise of same. Our client further instructs that the plans for the event halted when the country was placed under level 5 lockdown as part of the response to the Covid-19 pandemic,” reads the letter sent by Tshabalala’s lawyer to the DJs.

According to Tshabalala, DJ Maphorisa and Kabza have been ignoring him for eight months.
“All attempts at communication were, however, ignored by Mr Sekowe and Miss Keupilwe, and the event did, in fact, proceed. Our client’s concept was exploited for profit and in breach of the verbal agreement as stipulated above, and it is our instruction that an estimated R3-million was profited from the event at his exclusion, as according to social media posts by Mr Sekowe and Mahlangu, the event had sold out. It is therefore our instruction, to demand, as hereby we do, payment of R1-million within 14 days of receipt hereof, failing which we hold instructions to issue summons without further notice, the costs of which will be for your account,” reads the letter.
He said he would issue summons to the DJ’s.

DJ MAPHORISA’S ASSAULT CASE POSTPONED
On 14 June, DJ Maphorisa appeared at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court for the gender-based violence (GBV) case against him.
This comes after the Mnike hitmaker was granted bail last month after his girlfriend and actress Thuli Phongolo opened accused him of beating her up and strangling her during an argument in her home in Sandton, Johannesburg.
According to City Press, the former Rockville actress alleged in a police statement that Maphorisa became aggressive and punched her on her chest. He also allegedly slapped her across the face.
“He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” the police statement read.

Although she filed a withdrawal statement the day after the Maphorisa was arrested, her plea had not been finalised as the NPA needed time to investigate, thus postponing the case to 14 June.
However, on the day of the case, it was postponed to 5 July as there was no state representatives during the proceedings.
