Approximately 50 vehicles of spectators attending the 2023 Toyota Desert Race in Jwaneng, Botswana, caught fire and burnt to a crisp on Sunday, 25 June.

CAUSE OF MASSIVE VEHICLE FIRE AT 2023 TOYOTA DESERT RACE IN JWANENG REMAINS UNCLEAR
The Xinhua News Agency reported that the incident occurred around 13:30 on Sunday in the mining town in southern Botswana. Forty-nine cars were destroyed.
It is unclear how the fire started. No people were injured during the incident. Images and videos of the smouldering vehicles standing on a dry field made its and way to social media.

MINISTER TO VISIT SCENE OF INCIDENT
The Botswana Minister of Defence and Security, Thomas Mmusi, intends to visit the scene of the “inferno” on Monday afternoon.
“The main objective of the visit is to appreciate the incident and reassure the nation that the police are working around the clock in investigations and insuring [sic] it does not happen in the future,” read a statement.
As previously reported by The South African, Jwaneng has hosted previous editions of the 1000-kilometre race multiple times. The area is known for its tight turns.
