FAQ 2023 SARS TAX RETURN
Yes, it’s almost that time of year again: SARS tax return filing for individuals.
The 2023 start date is 7 July 2023, running to November 2023.
As it is every year, we recommend submitting your individual SARS tax return as soon as possible, before the system comes under strain towards the end of the submission period.
Below we have answered some FAQs to speed up the process of submitting you 2023 SARS tax return.
CAN I REGISTER ON MY PHONE TO SUBMIT MY TAX RETURN?
That’s easy.
The SARS MobiApp is a mobile-friendly channel from which you can submit your Income Tax Return (ITR12).
In fact, SARS is encouraging tax users to download the app rather than going into a branch in person.
HOW DO I INSTALL THE SARS MOBIAPP?
Simple, install the SARS MobiApp from the following app stores:
- Apple App Store for Apple devices
- Google Play Store for Android devices
- Huawei App Gallery for Huawei devices
Once downloaded, simply register, complete your ITR12, save and submit for evaluation. Note that you must have at least iOS version 10 and Android version 5.0 to the latest for the mobile app to work.

WHAT ELSE CAN THE APP DO?
Besides registering for eFiling and submitting your return, you may also use the app to:
- Reset your username and password
- Maintain and update your registered details
- Upload and submit supporting documents
- Make a payment to SARS
- Set up a Call Back from the SARS Contact Centre
- View a Notice of Assessment
- Request and view the Income Tax Statement of Account
- View the status of the return
- Use the tax calculator
- View previous ITR12 returns
- Access a Branch Locator that shows the estimated queue time
- Request a Statement of Account (SOA)
- Tax Practitioners can access the app for the completion and submission of client’s returns
WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO USE A MOBILE APP
As before, there are many ways to submit your 2023 SARS tax return.
eFiling has become the most popular one on your computer. Simply register at www.sarsefiling.co.za and complete the return.

You can file electronically at a SARS branch where an agent will assist you. But SARS insists that you please bring along all your supporting documentation and you must make an appointment before you visit a branch. To do so, call the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277.
A SARS official will book the appointment on your behalf. Only registered tax users can make an appointment. Make an appointment HERE.
SARS 2023 TAX RETURN
Alternatively, you can send an SMS to 47277 (iSARS) with this information and format: Booking (Space) ID number/Passport number. This SMS service is only available to taxpayers/registered representatives who are registered for Personal Income Tax (PIT).

You can still request a return to be posted to you and complete your return manually to then submit it to your nearest SARS branch. Similarly, you will need to make an appointment before you do this and be a registered tax user.
WHATS THE NUMBER FOR THE SARS HELPDESK?
All queries, including those to receive your individual tax number, the changing of banking details and how to reset your password can be done via the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277 (SARS). The centre is open between 08:00-17:00 (excluding weekends and public holidays).
