On Sunday, Percy Tau made history as he formed part of the title-winning Al Ahly team in the CAF Champions League after clinching a 3-2 aggregate win over Wydad Athletic Club.

Tau became the first South African player to win two CAF Champions League titles, having done so with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 before now repeating the feat with the Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly.

Pitso Mosimane coached Tau at both clubs, and shared a special message with the Bafana playmaker on social media.

“Patriotic Lion of Judah wearing the respectable South African flag. That flag is very notorious with winning major trophies in different countries and continents! Thanks God injuries gave you a break to show your talent. My player of the tournament and a Champion of Africa.”

INCREDIBLE SEASON FOR THE SOUTH AFRICAN

Tau was involved in 10 goals in 12 appearances during this season’s CAF Champions League, while he finished the tournament with five goals and five assists.

It’s a far cry from the situation at the start of the year when injury-prone Tau suffered a hamstring strain while in action for Al Ahly and had to spend another period out of action.

For the talented player, the last couple of years have dished up challenge after challenge on the injury front, which essentially threatened to derail his promising career.

Back in January, though, Mosimane took to Twitter to once again share words of positive reinforcement at the start of a new year.

“Top player. I wish 2023 keeps you away from injuries. Don’t worry too much, you are still a quality player to be playing at [a] high level. Just pray a lot,” said Mosimane.
