Camp Amandla
Mission
A non-profit organisation providing South African children infected & affected by HIV with a safe environment to express their fears living with HIV.
Amandla means “power” in xhosa and zulu. This word has been used as popular rallying cry throughout South African history. At Camp Amandla this word has a similar effect.
We strive to provide a safe environment for South African children to express their fears and concerns about living with HIV/AIDS.
We aspire to encourage our kids to be active participants in their future and their community, no matter what their HIV status.
At Camp Amandla we aim to emPOWER our kids to “Live Positively With HIV”
Founders
We were established in 2007 due to the vast needs of HIV/AIDS infected/affected children in South Africa’s townships. It was founded by Tricia Persson and Isaac Holdsworth.
The Story Behind It
We are fighting against HIV, against the stigma, fear and hatred that this virus has caused all over the world. At Camp Amandla we strive to teach our kids that HIV is not a death sentence, you can still be an active member of society and be HIV positive. Camp Amandla is a non-profit organization in Cape Town, South Africa.
Our staff are a mixture of local community members, university students, local social workers and foreign volunteers. We have also been fortunate enough to have a group of professional staff generously donate their time and expertise to Camp Amandla for a few weeks every year.
