The family of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi have confirmed that the 93-year-old traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch has tested positive once again to Covid-19, but have expressed their relief that he is double vaccinated and “relatively asymptomatic”.
The family of the Founder and President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and Inkosi of the Buthelezi Clan, said in a statement that “uMntwana wa KwaPhindangene has again tested positive for Covid-19. We are pleased to say that, as with his first bout in August last year, he remains relatively asymptomatic and is in good spirits.”
The family said that Buthelezi’s only regret is no longer being able to attend Friday’s installation ceremony of the Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe.
Family spokesperson Dr Bhekuyise Ngqengelele Buthelezi said that, as required, Prince Buthelezi has begun self-isolating at home for the mandatory period.
“We are grateful to know that he is double vaccinated and will be monitored by a very capable team,” said Dr Buthelezi.
The family thanked everyone for their prayers as they await a good outcome.
“We also urge everyone to be circumspect in this time of increasing infections and to vigilantly take the necessary precautions to protect both lives and livelihoods. #Covid19 #StaySafe #StayHealthy #GetVaccinated”
