Twenty-year-old Jenna Lowe, who launched a nationwide campaign to draw attention to organ donation, has received the operation she desperately needed.
The Western Cape youngster, who was diagnosed with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension at the age of 17, and told it was unlikely she would make it to her 21st without a new set of lungs, launched a campaign inviting everyone to her 21st party next year…if they signed up as an organ donor.
Yesterday she received the news she had been hoping for. A perfect match was found in Johannesburg.
Her mother, Gabi Lowe, posted the following message on Facebook:
“Dearest friends…our support system…at last our miracle arrived in the form of a perfect match for Jen.
“We evacuated swiftly to Jhb and Jen has undergone a long and difficult surgery. Please keep your beautiful messages of love and support coming and keep your candles lit as there are many many critical weeks ahead.
“Hold our fighter in your hearts and thoughts and prayers…”
Messages of support, and joy, have flooded in as the country holds Jenna in their thoughts and prayers.
Jenna launched the Get Me to 21 Campaign two months ago; and more recently she launched an initiative called Seven Taps for Seven Lives, referring to tapping on a football (for instance) seven times to represent the seven lives that can be saved by each organ donor.
Many well known personalities in South Africa, including the Stormers and the DA’s Helen Zille, have supported Jenna’s campaign which not only raises attention for her plight, but for all those who need organ donations. Just a week ago, on December 5, Zille became the 4031st person to sign up as an organ donor to get Jenna to 21.
Our candles are lit…and we wish Jenna a successful and full recovery…one beautiful breath at a time. (And our hearts go out to the family of the organ donor too.)
