A North West woman and her children have survived a “traumatic attack” on a farm in Broederstroom. This is the fourth farm attack in just two days in the Hartbeespoort area in the North West. The news comes today – Saturday 29 August – as protests are being held at the Union Buildings to raise awareness against farm attacks, murders and racism in South Africa. (Watch below)
In the latest attack, Sonja van der Merwe and her children were detained in the bedroom of a North West farm by four men with pangas, while three others ransacked the house for valuables, according to DA NW Councillor in Madibeng, Erna Rossouw
The group of attackers fled with the family’s car and left with various items, including jewelry, cellphones and a computer, said the DA in a statement. The gang fled on foot after crashing Sonja’s Kia Sportage into the farm gate.
It is suspected that these are the same attackers who were responsible for three other attacks on farmers and farm workers in the area over the past two days. No arrests have been made.
Rossouw said in a statement that in line with the DA’s recently launched court watching briefs unit, the Van der Merwe family has been referred for trauma counselling.

A debate is due to be delivered on 1 September regarding the government’s refusal to classify farm attacks as a priority crime.
The DA has long called for the reinstatement of rural security units within the SAPS to combat farm attacks.
