South Africa’s world famous Drakensberg Boys Choir has joined the #LightSAred campaign which is taking place tonight, Wednesday 5 August… when all those involved from the events industry will simultaneously light buildings and structures across the country.
The aim of the #LightSAred campaign is to draw attention to the current crisis in the event industry – crippled by Covid-19 restrictions – and encourage the South African government to acknowledge it, and form an itinerary to keep the industry alive.
The Drakensberg Boys Choir says: “Along with the rest of the world’s artists, musicians, events managers, concert venues and promotors, The Drakensberg Boys Choir has suffered a massive blow due to the worldwide pandemic. Seven tours and 68 concerts have been cancelled so far, and at present there does not seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel.”

Marketing Manager Deidre Alcock told SAPeople: “The Drakensberg Boys Choir supports the #LightSAred campaign, which aims to create awareness for the events and live performance industry, which has been crippled by the virus outbreak.”
Organisers of the #LightSAred campaign say that if things don’t change, “the events industry will not survive the next 100 days!” They say they are “calling for help”. At least 453 buildings will be lit up this evening, as well as private establishments.
Drakensberg Boys Choir fans have sent in messages of support from around the country and as far afield as Japan:
The Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Tourism, Manny de Freitas, has announced the DA will also participate in the #LightSAred campaign where the party’s headquarters will be illuminated in red, in s”upport of the dire plight faced by the events and entertainment industry”.
Thousands of freelancers, venues, theatres, companies and businesses have been unable to work since the blanket ban on all events in March this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, said the DA.
“The aim is to get government and financial institutions to extend financial relief to those who earn a living in these industries, until they are permitted to resume work.”
