The Kliphuis mystery

A holiday house in the Eastern Cape has become the site of an intractable mystery after a young couple was found dead in the bathroom on the morning of Sunday 26 April 2020. Without any obvious cause of death or injuries, even the post-mortems couldn’t give their families closure.

According to JBay News, the couple – a 26-year-old male and 28-year-old female – were visiting Kliphuis, about 17km from, for the weekend with a friend who is a tenant on the farm. The couple allegedly went to have a shower late on the Saturday night (25 April) while the tenant went to sleep.

In the morning, when the tenant saw they weren’t in their room, he kicked in the bathroom door (which was locked from the inside) and discovered his friends’ bodies.

Carte Blanches says that with delays at forensic laboratories, answers as to how the tragedy occurred can take years – but after the incident hit the media, several more people came forward reporting blackouts in the same room.

COVID-19 Lockdown: Unforeseen consequences

With a burgeoning homeless population in winter when Durban’s milder coastal climate attracts street people and roaming drug addicts from around the country, the City of eThekwini could take no chances with COVID-19. With the help of NGOs and volunteers, a handful of public spaces have been fenced with barbed wire as secure, monitored camps. Over 2000 residents are given three square meals and medical care. Once inside, no-one can leave, and infection screening and sanitisation are mandatory. The only trade-off? Drugs must go. For some homeless people, it’s been their first opportunity to get the support they needed to heal from addiction.

Presenter Claire Mawisa says: “The barbed-wire lockdown sites in Durban may look extreme, but the compassionate care happening on the inside is transformative and gives drug-dependant homeless people a much-needed second chance at life.”
