On Monday (7 June), members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria (as well as at consulates in Johannesburg and Cape Town), in condemnation of the killing of George Floyd… whose death in the US has kindled global protest and debate about justice, prejudice and police brutality. Demonstrators branded placards in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. EFF Leader Julius Malema addressed crowds whilst wearing a black shirt with the words “I Can’t Breathe” (referring to Floyd’s last words). In a fiery speech Malema spoke of xenophobia, police corruption and ongoing racial segregation in South Africa. Photos by Tom Brown.
