A video has gone viral showing a taxi driver had crammed 58 school children into his Quantum taxi, a vehicle that has a holding capacity of 14 (according to the officer at the end of the video).
There has been widespread condemnation for the incident, and Joel Seabi, Limpopo Transport and Safety Spokesperson, said Law Enforcement will bring the driver and the owner “to book”.
Seabi said the driver has been charged with Section 56 – for overloading the vehicle; and the vehicle itself has been impounded and taken off the road.
Seabi said a preliminary report reveals the taxi driver had not applied for an operating license, and the local taxi association has denounced the taxi for its “abhorrent disregard for the law… putting lives at serious danger”.
The traffic authorities who stopped the vehicle (and patiently counted each and every child!) have been praised for being observant and putting an end to this driver’s practice of packing the children in like sardines.
