The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed in the past hour that the Ekurhuleni Disaster Management Services team has managed to extinguish the pipeline fire that caused havoc today in Alberton, South Africa.
Residents in about 40 homes, living near the pipeline had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Ekurhuleni said it was “glad that there are no fatalities”.
The fire broke out following a jet fuel Transnet pipeline that caused a gas explosion in Verwoerdpark, said Ekurhuleni.
Earlier this morning technicians and the EMS (Emergency Management Services) were on site. They shut down pipelines in both directions and reassured the public that the fire would subside as soon as there was no more gas or fuel running through.
The fire has now been extinguished, said authorities.
Twitter was ‘alight’ with photos and videos of the unusual scene.
