SA Provincial Election Results: EFF and IFP Displace DA in Some Areas

Whilst the African National Congress (ANC) remains the leader in all provinces except the Western Cape, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has lost some ground as the official opposition across the country… with the EFF stepping into that position in a few provinces, and the IFP doubling its popularity to become KwaZulu-Natal’s new official opposition party. Here are the exact results so far, at 08h00 Saturday:

IFP becomes official opposition in KZN

Counting has been completed in KwaZulu-Natal’s 4885 voting districts with the ANC obtaining the lion’s share of the vote at 54.22%, followed by the IFP at 16.34% placing it as the official opposition in the provincial legislature.

The IFP (Inkatha Freedom Party) leader Narend Singh had said the party was hoping to do better than it did in 2014 and “get back to the number two spot”.

EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) are official opposition in:

Limpopo: Of 3157 voting districts, the ANC won the majority with 75.49% of the vote followed by the EFF at 14.43%.

Mpumalanga: Of 1772 voting districts the ANC sits at the top of the food chain with 70.58% of the vote followed by the EFF at 12.79% of votes.

North West: Of 1733 voting districts, the ANC leads with 61.87% followed by the EFF at 18.64%.

DA is official opposition in:

Eastern Cape: Of 4791 voting districts, the ANC leads with 68.74% of the vote, followed closely by the DA with 15.73% of vote.

Free State: The ANC obtained 61.14% of the votes cast in the province’s 1529 voting districts, and the DA 17.58%.

Gauteng (still counting): Of 2742 of the 2771 districts (98.95%), the ANC is at the front of the pack with 50.06% of the votes, followed by the DA with 27.62% of votes and the EFF at 14.63% of the vote.

Northern Cape: The ANC had secured 57.54% of the vote, followed by the DA at 25.51% of the vote after vote counting concluded at the province’s 707 voting districts.

DA retains leadership in Western Cape

The DA obtained the lion’s share of votes in the Western Cape with 55.45% of the vote followed by the ANC at 28.64%.

The IEC is expected to announce the official results of the elections at a ceremony later this evening.

EFF leader Julius Malema will today be attending the funeral of his grandmother Koko Sarah Malema. It will be streamed on social media.
