CapeNature and SANCCOB Saves Seabirds successfully released 13 rescued and rehabilitated African penguins on Saturday at Stony Point penguin colony in Betty’s Bay, on the Overberg coast of South Africa’s Western Cape province.
While the first bunch raced (or waddled) for freedom, watch below as a few stragglers needed to be coaxed into the water… and then did a U-turn – as if they didn’t want to leave their wonderful human rescuers. Or maybe the water was too cold…
Stony Point penguin colony is the only breeding location that has actually seen an increase in the number of African penguins, according to CapeNature.
Among the box tippers at yesterday’s 2018 Penguin Palooza event was Ward 10 Councillor Fanie Krige, Good Hope FM breakfast host Dan Corder and vlogger Devdondidit.
Crowds had gathered to watch the moving release at Stony Point Nature Reserve. Betty’s Bay is about 100km from Cape Town.
The Palooza is a joint event between the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) and CapeNature.
If you’d like to witness something similar – SANCCOB will be releasing more rehabilitated African penguins at 10h00 at Seaforth Beach in Simon’s Town on 10 November, to celebrate African Penguin Awareness Day!
