South African expat Justin van Pletzen, who has been living in Dubai since 2016, not only spotted, but confronted one of South Africa’s most wanted fugitives – Ajay Gupta – in the United Arab Emirates city yesterday.
Two videos, shot from different angles, were posted to YouTube, showing the encounter between the Indian businessman at the centre of South Africa’s State of Capture debacle and the 39-year-old salesman from Stellenbosch.
In a radio interview with Jacaranda FM on Wednesday, Justin said “I literally walked out of my building this morning for my 10 o’clock smoke break. I was standing chatting to another South African colleague of mine and him and his security guard walked past us.”
The SA businessman says he immediately recognised Ajay, but his friend wasn’t convinced. Justin decided to hang around and wait for the man (who did turn out to be Ajay) to exit the building he’d just entered (believed to be the Indian Consulate); and to confront him and ask Ajay the “hardcore” million-dollar question on all South Africans’ lips: “When are you going to return to South Africa and face the charges… and basically, you’ve left South Africa with a sore heart.”
Ajay, who shook hands and appeared jovial and friendly, can be heard answering: “They are not giving a reply, the day they are giving a reply I will go there.”
Justin told Times Live that he was spurred on by a R300 bet, and that were it not for the tough laws (and looming bodyguard) he would have tackled Ajay for all he did to South Africa.
