Minibus taxis in South Africa have been filmed using the pavement as an extra lane!

Gauteng photographer, Susan Harwood, captured the action on film in William Nicol Drive in Johannesburg on 30 January 2018 at 06h40. Her initial post was apparently removed after receiving 3,500 shares and being sent to the ‘powers that be’ to put an end to the lawlessness on SA roads.

Susan re-uploaded the film on 2 February where it has been viewed over 400,000 times.

She said: “I sent it to Carte Blanche and to JMPD (Joburg Metro Police Department) – so perhaps something will be done…

“Minibus taxis in this country (the majority of whom ignore red lights, stop in the middle/inappropriate spot on the road and drive in emergency lanes and pavements) operate in a way that is abusive to passengers AND all other road users.”

Susan cites a study done by the Automobile Association of South Africa which apparently recorded an annual total of 70,000 minibus taxi crashes… “which indicates that taxis in SA amount for double the rate of crashes than all other passenger vehicles.”

She says: “We need to share far and wide so something POSITIVE can result. If you are reading and wish to comment, PLEASE refrain from making any racist comments. This is NOT what it’s all about. It’s about a genuine concern for ALL people on our roads and looking for positive action and solutions!

“Perhaps being stopped, clamped and being forced to pay an enormous fine to get the taxi up and running again?”

The South Africa Police Services (SAPS) told SAPeople: “We will escalate it to Crime Stop.”
