A true South African hero risked his own life yesterday to dive into the ocean and rescue a man from the wild seas.
Shanaaz Sulaiman uploaded two videos that show the rescue. Shanaaz said: “Young man in trouble amidst the waves at Dalebrook [near St James beach, Western Cape], and a hero goes to his rescue.
“Thank you to the stranger who dived in and went to his assistance, bringing him safely back to shore.”
The stranger who dived in is a Capetonian known as Brad ‘likes to party’ Van Zyl.
One witness, Shelley Scheepers, said on Facebook: “Witnessed this today and it was so scary to watch. The guy who saved him deserves a medal. He risked his own life and was amazing.”
The videos were sent to NSRI which said: “Well done to this fit young rescuer, you saved a life.”
Another witness, Janet Polden Melidonis, added: “I was on the beach… you were very kind and generous with your skills. He is a very lucky man.”
Brad (who clearly likes to party and save lives) said: “Thank you for the wonderful words. Feeling grateful that all ended well ❤️.”
NSRI do caution viewers of the videos below: “It is dangerous to go into the water to rescue someone if you are untrained, unfit and don’t have flotation.”

Meanwhile Morgan Bay Hotel owner, Richard Warren Smith, was also commended by NSRI yesterday for his efforts following the drowning of a Bloemfontein man at Morgan Bay. NSRI East London said Smith launched his jet-ski and recovered a 39 year old man who was found floating face down in the surf-line about 100 meters off-shore.
Smith brought the victim to the beach where, assisted by bystanders, CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) efforts were commenced. A rescue helicopter arrived and paramedics continued with CPR but sadly after all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted he was declared deceased.
