Legendary Cape Town venue – the Fireman’s Arms – was in flames last night. This morning, Cape Town residents were in mourning, remembering the many memories they made at one of South Africa’s most famous pubs… well known for its beers, wine, food and sport!
Fireman’s Arms was established in 1864 and is one of the oldest pubs in Cape Town. Its walls are lined with historic fire helmets and fire brigade memorabilia. Each year, the 9/11 tragedy is marked here by firefighters from Cape Town and surrounding areas.
Shocking video footage and photos showed the popular pub burning in the early hours of the morning. (Watch below.)
However there may be good news. There are reports on Twitter that the fire was contained to the beer garden, and that the Old Fireman’s historical interior has been saved.
For now Fireman’s Arms has left a message on social media announcing they are closed today and will update daily.
Cape Town's legendary #FiremansArms @FiremansArmsCT in flames BUT there's a chance it was only the beer garden. Historical section may be saved. Holding thumbs! pic.twitter.com/8YwDWIOyFB

What’s left of a Cape Town institution – Firemans Arms (est. 1864). I’m so distraught I can’t even bring myself to play on the irony. So many good times. What a sad day 😥 #FiremansArms pic.twitter.com/q3I4gXcQ4v
