A 23-year-old final year medical student – Tamaryn Green – has been crowned Miss South African 2018 at a glitzy event in Pretoria.

Tamaryn, who is the 60th winner of the coveted crown, is from Paarl in the Western Cape. She was also named Miss Universe South Africa, while runner-up Thulisa Keyi (26) was given the Miss World SA title. Thulisa, a University of Cape Town graduate (B-Com Accounting) is from Gauteng.

As the winner, Tamaryn’s prizes include a fully-furnished apartment for the year, a car, and R1-million cash.

Speaking on Sunday night, an elated Tamaryn said winning this title will allow her to achieve her dream of helping people. “I want to empower women to be the best version of themselves,” she said.

“As Miss South Africa I will use my medical knowledge to help and heal. Secondly, as an influencer I will inspire and motivate all the women of South Africa to reach for their strengths and overcome their challenges.”

It’s her burning ambition to help reconstruct a better South Africa, a role she feels qualified for because “I grew up being exposed to two very different worlds: the fortunate and less fortunate. I want to assist in bringing those worlds together.”

A couple of months ago, Tamaryn revealed to the Paarl Post that entering Miss South Africa had been a lifelong dream. “At first, I wanted to finish my studies and become a medical doctor, but this year my heart guided me to enter the competition. It just felt right. My heart told me: this is your year.”

Earlier today, she posted a photo of all 12 finalists, and said: “Ladies, the day has arrived that we have all been waiting for. Today we live our dream, today we make history. I wish each and every one of you the best for tonight. It has been a blessing getting to know and love you all. Let’s have fun and walk the stage with confidence and pride as South Africans. Love you all❤❤”
