South African men turned up today in Tshwane, to stand up for women. To march against abusive men. To say “Not in My Name”.
The men – young and old – were joined in the march to the Union Building in Pretoria by Government Communication officials, a wide range of political parties, and celebrities like Cassper Nyovest who are role models for many – all united in a concerted effort to support the #NotInMyName movement.
The march was led by a striking ‘Lady in White’… a woman who represents all women, past and present, who live in fear of abuse. South Africa has recently been rocked by a steadily increasing rate of abuse and murder of young girls and women by men who know them.
Addressing the crowd, speakers said men at clubs, pubs and soccer matches have to speak to each other and stop speaking as if women are commodities.
Young men, they said, have to commit to be champions against sexism and violence against women in their communities… and educate other young men.
Phumla Williams, Deputy Director-General of the GCIS, said today is about “society starting a conversation about who we are and how we work together to support this cause”. She said she’s proud of all those men who joined the March.
“Wish they had been more! But it’s a start…”

Meanwhile on Saturday morning the Minister of Police tweeted this… which some enjoyed and pointed out it is Saturday and Fikile Mbalula should be allowed to relax, but others said was inappropriate at this time.
