Shocking news has emerged today of a young boy of 10 being forced to lie with his face down in a taxi in Johannesburg, while his mother was raped for four hours.
The three armed men, who tricked the mom and her son into boarding the minibus taxi, reportedly also made the mom hand over her bank card and PIN number.
It’s believed that this is one in a string of “taxi rape” incidents, with the first being reported a year ago, in March 2016. According to reports on Twitter, there were at least three incidents in one week of June last year; and in one day the men had raped nine women.
In an interview with the BBC Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said: “A group of three to four men driving in two separate Quantums, one grey and another white, pick up women pretending to be a taxi, rob them at gunpoint and then proceed to rape them.”
Speaking to Eye Witness News, the mother said she had prayed throughout her ordeal that her son would not be hurt by the men.
Gauteng’s Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane says they have identified one vehicle that has been identified and one suspect has been identified, following an emergency meeting with taxi associations this morning. No arrests have yet been made.
A warning has been circulated on social media saying: “A Quantum taxi in Soweto with 3 men and a female is doing rounds, targeting women. Once you board the taxi the female suspect gets off at the next stop, leaving you alone with the 3 male suspects. The suspects then threaten you and drive to a secluded area where they rob and rape you. Afterwards they dump you elsewhere. There have been numerous similar incidents reported. Avoid using taxis with just male passengers. Please share and be vigilant.”
