The Motion of No Confidence (in the President) debate will go ahead in Parliament on Thursday, according to the Democratic Alliance (DA).
The DA said, in breaking news this evening in South Africa, that the secretary of the National Assembly has confirmed the debate will take place on Thursday 10 November 2016.
“ANC MPs will have to decide: It’s Zuma or South Africa!” said the DA.
Earlier Monday DA Chief Whip John Steenhuisen sent a letter to the Speaker, Baleka Mbete, expressing the priority that the motion should be accorded.
A motion of no confidence in the President is a vote in the National Assembly where Members of Parliament (MPs) decide whether to withdraw the President’s mandate to govern, explained the DA.
The motion needs to be supported by a majority of the 400 members, therefore at least 201 votes are needed.
The DA says this means, if all opposition parties vote to pass the motion, then “we need at least 50 of the 249 ANC MPs to vote with conscience“.
If the motion is passed, then President Zuma and other members of the Cabinet, and any Deputy Ministers, must resign.
