Wednesday’s video rant about protesting students – posted by Josh Drizzy Bergh from Touwsrivier – has captured nationwide attention and has attracted an incredible one million views! And for those whose Afrikaans is nie baie goed nie – he’s translated it into English too!
By Thursday evening, the video – which was only uploaded the previous day – had already received over 893,000 views! And by midday Friday, it reach 1 million.
In the video the 27-year-old truck driver told South Africa’s protesting students exactly what he thought of them… including “I don’t agree with this kak” and “Asseblief… wees ‘n bietjie civilised”.
Thursday, in response to many requests, Josh posted an English version of his rant, on his brand new public page – “Josh Drizzy Bergh – Uncle Becker” – and promised South Africa will be hearing lots more from him.
News24 also posted Josh’s original Afrikaans video with translated English text over it. (See below.)
Professor Jonathan Jansen, former University of the Free State vice-chancellor, shared Josh’s video saying “I rest my case. You, sir, are educated. Often wisdom comes from the most (extra)ordinary of citizens. Listen to this young man.”
Earlier Thursday, the professor – who is taking up a new position in the USA – posted the following “alert” (his word) regarding the protests: “More and more of our top academics are telling me that they are now considering leaving to take up top academic posts overseas. I am sorry to say this, but you were warned. There begins the slide for our top universities and the end of high quality education in the one last remaining African nation with solid institutions. As if these marauding protestors care…”
Many South Africans applauded Josh, calling on a sponsor to help him live his dream with drama classes. One supporter suggested getting him in touch with Trevor Noah (who will be in Johannesburg next month), and said ” Josh’s sense of diplomacy is what makes him so special. He tells you so nicely where to get off that you cannot be offended.”
