The South African contingent performed spectacularly in Rome today with Wayde van Niekerk, Sunette Viljoen and Caster Semenya ALL winning gold in their events.
The SA team was competing in the 2016 International Association of Athletics Federations Diamond League (IAAF DL) event in Italy, the fifth leg of the international track and field campaign.
Caster Semenya, who was tipped as the favourite for the Women’s 800m race (after winning both the IAAF DL contests in Dohan and Rabat last month), powered to victory to make it a hat trick in Rome… equalling the World Leading time of 1:56.64, ahead of IAAF World Indoor champion Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi (1:58.20). South African minister of sport Fikile Mbalula tweeted excitedly: “Caster Semenya makes another GOLD WIN in 800m women’s #Rome2016 IAAF Diamond League.”
Wayde van Niekerk won the 400m in Rome with a time of 44’19”.
Sunette Viljoen, who is ranked highest for Women’s Javelin Throwing, won by a narrow margin of 3cm. She achieved 61.95m, just ahead of Madara Palameika from Latvia.
In the men’s Long Jump, South Africa’s Ruswahl Samaai came fourth and Luvo Manyonga seventh.
