Congratulations to South African surfer Bianca Buitendag who has made it through to the Semi Finals of the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast of Australia, in the first ASP World Tour event of the year.
“My expectations for this year is to take every opportunity with as much excitement and enthusiasm as I can,” says Bianca. “It’s a massive opportunity for me to be on tour and I would like higher expectations than last year so maybe put a top 7, but I am just taking every opportunity as it comes. It’s so great!”
Bianca (20) started surfing at the age of seven when her father taught her and her brothers at the Strand and Jongensfontein point break. Her best memories are “sunset surfs with family. There is just no other place I would rather be.”
At the age of 11, Bianca and her family move to Victoria Bay near George, where she began to focus more on competitive surfing. She stood out from a young age – winning the Billabong u/20 finals at 13. By 2009 she had won every contest she entered in South Africa.
Bianca also obtained provincial colours in surf lifesaving, biathlon, gymnastics, swimming and hockey…but decided to focus on surfing because of her love for the ocean. She also enjoys wake-boarding, kite-surfing and any extreme water sports.
The competition will continue tomorrow morning where Biance is up against Lakey Peterson.
