A foreign coupled found the body of an unidentified woman in the water near Belvedere on Knysna Lagoon.

Jerome Simonis, the station commander of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Knysna, reported that they found the body at 7:43 on Thursday.

Eyewitness reports from a foreign couple on holiday in Knysna activated the NSRI Knysna duty crew, prompting them to respond to a body spotted in the water near Belvedere on Knysna Lagoon.

RESCUERS RECOVERED THE BODY OF WOMAN WEARING A MAROON TOP AND DARK PANTS

He said the NSRI Knysna rescue swimmers and the SA Police Services (SAPS) responded directly to the scene. At the same time, NSRI Knysna boat crew launched the NSRI rescue craft JayTee IV. Accompanied by SAPS WPDS (Water Policing and Diving Services).

Someone alerted the Western Cape Health Emergency Services.

“On arrival on the scene, the body of a colored woman wearing a maroon top and dark color long pants, suspected to be aged in her 40s, who may have been fishing, was located. 

“Her body recovered from the water onto the NSRI rescue craft by a Police diver, assisted by the NSRI Knysna crew.” Jerome Simonis said.

AUTHORITIES STILL HAVEN’T IDENTIFIED THE WOMAN

Simonis stated that they brought the body to the NSRI station 12 Knysna rescue base. Where Government Health Forensic Pathology Services took it into their care.

He furthermore added that the woman remains unidentified.

ON SUNDAY A MAN DROWNED IN THE WITBANK DAM 

On Saturday, reports of a 35-year-old local man missing in the dam activated the NSRI Witbank Dam duty crew.

NSRI Witbank Dam station commander Travis Clack said this happened at around 14:54 on Saturday. 

Authorities believed the man had fallen off the rocks into the water near a local restaurant at Witbank Dam, and he had not surfaced.

AUTHORITIES BELIEVE THAT THE MAN MAY HAVE JUMPED FROM A DIVING PLATFORM 

Upon arrival at the scene, Clack determined that the man may have jumped from a diving platform into the water and had not surfaced after entering.

Police divers deployed into the water from our NSRI rescue craft located and recovered the body of the man during a scuba dive search.

He added that the police divers recovered the body of the man at a depth of approximately 6 meters.

EMERGENCY RESPONDERS DECLARED THE MAN DEAD ON THE SCENE 

“Sadly, the man was declared deceased by paramedics.” 

The NSRI crew and police transported the man’s body aboard the NSRI rescue craft to the Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club. Where police and Government Health Forensics Pathology Services took custody of the body.

Police have opened an Inquest docket.
