In what will be a major attraction for the Western Cape, a small town near the Mother City will soon be home to the world’s longest zipline.

As reported by TimeOut, the beautiful Cape Overberg region, just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town, will play host to the K3 SA Forest Adventures Caledon zipline where thrillseekers can zoom along a 3.2 kilometre cable, from a mountain summit to the lower landing stage alongside the N2 freeway.

The brand new zipline will soon beat out the current title-holder of ‘World’s longest zipline’, which is held by the Jais Flight in the Arabian emirate of Ras al Khaimah, sitting at only 2.83 kilometres.

Zipline location, location, location

Clinton Lerm, owner of SA Forest Adventures, explained how he found the perfect location for the new zipline.

“I spent two years searching for suitable sites all over South Africa. The location had to be both logistically practical and easily accessible,” Lerm said as per TimeOut.

“One day, I drove past the mountain from where the [K3] zipline starts and saw towers on top, indicating that a road had already been built to the summit.” he added.

“I later rode up the mountain with a farmer and immediately knew this was the perfect spot for the world’s longest zipline. But I had to do thorough calculations and consider factors like wind direction – it’s not just about spanning a cable for ziplining,” Lerm said.

Lerm stated that after long years of planning and adjusting, this past May led to them finally having a guide cable installed by helicopter and the bulk of the equipment moved into place, which will be followed by the installation of the main cable, tensioning and testing.

No official opening date has been announced just yet, but plans are underway to open by July next month.
