Power King has been officially declared the winner of the Durban July 2015, South Africa’s – and possibly Africa’s – greatest premier horse racing events.
Although Power King was the first horse to cross the line, there was a review from Punta Arenas. Minutes ago Power King’s win was confirmed.
Punta Arenas came second, and Tellina third.
The famous Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal race is held annually at the Greyville Racecourse on the first Saturday of July. When it was first held in 1897 the distance was 1600m (a mile), but has since been changed – in 1970 – to 2200 metres (11 furlongs).
Today’s prize was a cool R3.5-million.
The race, which is open to thoroughbred horses of all ages, was Race #7 of the day. Racing will continue at the track into the evening.
Fashion has also been an important part of today with awards including those for Most Striking Couple, Classic Racewear Female, Classic Racewear Male and Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator categories.
